Spearheaded by Opportunitas Aequa, Project Uganda is an important initiative to help rebuild war-ravaged communities through the healing power of soccer, and we were proud to be able to contribute.

District 9: it the biggest story for VFS in 2009, and one of the biggest in our long history. Directed by 3D Animation & Visual Effects grad Neill Blomkamp, co-written by Writing alum Terri Tatchell, and featuring over 40 VFS grads contributing to the groundbreaking visual effects, District 9 showed that VFS alumni are a creative force to be reckoned with. The film has grossed over $200 million worldwide, and Neill and Terri shared a Golden Globe nomination for Best Screenplay. “It has certainly given back what I put into it, on a critical level and a fan level,” Neill told us in August.

Foundation Visual Art & Design alum Ryan Copple pushes forward with a new, steampunky web series called Riese. Since premiering, Riese has landed on the web series A-list, winning acclaim and viewers with great production values, good storytelling, and a name cast. And Ryan and crew are making the most of the online format: “Without being beholden to anyone but our fans, we’re allowed to do whatever we like with the story, so long as our viewers are happy,” Ryan says.

Highlights Of Our Year

2009 was a year to remember for Vancouver Film School, as our alumni and students made a profound impact on the global stage. They inspired us, educated us, challenged us, made us proud, made us celebrate, and kept us entertained.

Grad success is nothing new to VFS, but this was something truly special.
